A disabled woman with amazingly strong will

A $1,750 motorcycle can help this woman fulfill her dream

Do Thi Xuan Nga is a woman with disability in Thai Nguyen. She was born in 1970 in a destitute family. Since then, Nga has been suffering from polio because her father was infected with Agent Orange during the Vietnam War and he passed it on to her. Due to her congenital polio, her feet have been paralyzed since her birth and kept getting weaker and weaker day by day. Nga said that during her childhood she always felt self-pity and jealous of other kids and when she saw them going to school on foot and she couldn’t. Nevertheless, this strong-willed woman did not surrender to her cruel fate; she tried as hard as she could to go to school, even if she had to hand walk. Born in a poor family, she had to work in HVT paper factory while studying, but she still managed to graduate from high school. Afterwards, she was determined to get a job and provide for herself on her own. After taking tailoring training, she became a tailor. However, at the present, she can’t earn much. Because of her disability, Nga has to take xe om (motorbike taxi) to travel around taking order from clients or buying new cloth, and the pay for xe om takes away much of the money she makes. Hence, as much as she doesn’t want to, she still has to depend quite a lot on her family, which consists of 7 members.

Aside from Nga, only 3 members in her family can make an income, including her parents and her elder brother. Her 69-year old father and 70-year old mother are retired and receive a monthly retirement pension of $72 and $77 for each of them respectively. Nga’s brother, Do Xuan Khanh, born in 1967, is a worker who earns $92 VND a month. Nga is well aware that her family is very poor and she wants to relieve the burden for her family by trying to become financially independent.

Nga said: “I have always hoped that someday, with donated money from kind people, I will be able to buy a motorcycle for people with disability. With that, my work will become so much easier and more profitable. Also, without having to pay the xe om fee, I can keep most of the money I make for myself and reduce the burden I’ve put on my family and society. Please help me fulfill my dream.”

This cause was recommended by Hanoi Disabled People Association(DPH) through the Capacity Building and Awareness Raising Project. Please kindly donate to DPH so that it can help Do Thi Xuan Nga’s family and similar causes improve their lives effectively and sustainably.
